BÉCQUER, Gustavo Adolfo

Rima VII

Del salón en el ángulo oscuro,

de su dueña tal vez olvidada,

silenciosa y cubierta de polvo

veíase el arpa.

¡Cuánta nota dormía en sus cuerdas

como el pájaro duerme en las ramas,

esperando la mano de nieve

que sabe arrancarlas!

?¡Ay ?pensé?; ¡cuántas veces el genio

así duerme en el fondo del alma,

y una voz, como Lázaro, espera

que le diga: «¡Levántate y anda!».

Rime VII

In the dark corner of the hall,

perhaps forgotten by her mistress,

silent and dusty,

laid the harp.

So many notes slept in her strings,

as the songbird sleeps in the branches,

waiting for the snowy hand

that knows how to awake them!

Alas! - I thought - how often does genius

likewise sleep in the deepest of the heart,

and a voice, like Lazarus, awaits

to be told "Rise and walk!

Rima XI

“I am dark-tinted and ardent as fire,

I am the symbol of fervency;

My heart runneth over with joyous desire.

Searchest thou for me?”—No; not for thee.

“Pale is my brow and golden my tresses;

Endless felicity I can bestow;

I guard a treasure of rare tendernesses.

Callest thou for me?”—Not for thee; no.

“I am a dream, I am an impossible

Fantasy hollow of luster and gloom;

I am impalpable, I am intangible;

I cannot love thee.”—Oh, come thou; come!

Rima XIII

Y our eyes are blue, and when you laugh,

Their smooth clarity reminds me

Of the shimmering glow of morning

Reflected in the sea.

Your eyes are blue, and when you cry,

Your transparent tears

Seem to me dewdrops

Upon a violet.

Your eyes are blue, and if in their depths

An idea radiates like a point of light,

I think of the evening sky

And a lost star!

Translated by Walter Wykes

Rima XVI

Si al mecer las azules campanillas

de tu balcón

crees que suspirando pasa el viento

murmurador,

sabe que, oculto entre las verdes hojas,

suspiro yo.

Si al resonar confuso a tus espaldas

vago rumor

abrasador,

sabe que, aunque invisible, al lado tuyo

respiro yo.

If on thy balcony thou seest thy flowers

Quiver and sway,

And thinkest that murmuring through them

Sigheth the wind,

Know then that hidden 'neath their leafy green

'Tis I that sigh!

If o'er thy shoulder thou hearest a murmur

Vaguely resounding,

And think'st by thy name there hath called thee

Some distant voice,

Know that amid the shadows which surround thee

'Tis I that call!

If thy heart, waking in the depths of night,

Quivers and sinks,

As on thy lips thou feel'st a breath,

A breath of flame,

Know that unseen beside thee

'Tis I that breathe!

Rima XXXIX

Why tell me so? I know it: she is fickle,

Capricious, she is arrogant and vain;

Before true feeling from her heart would spring,

Water would gush forth from the sterile plain.

I know there is no fiber that responds

To love within her heart, a serpent’s lair:

That she is an inanimate statue … but …

She is so fair!”

Rima XL

Su mano entre mis manos,

sus ojos en mis ojos,

la amorosa cabeza

apoyada en mi hombro.

¡Dios sabe cuántas veces,

con paso perezoso,

hemos vagado juntos,

bajo los altos olmos

que de su casa prestan

misterio y sombra al pórtico!

Y ayer… un año apenas,

pasado como un soplo,

con qué exquisita gracia,

con qué admirable aplomo,

me dijo al presentarnos

un amigo oficioso:

-Creo que en alguna parte

he visto a usted. -¡Ah! bobos,

que sois de los salones

comadres de buen tono,

y andáis por allí a caza

de galantes embrollos:

¡Qué historia habéis perdido!

¡Qué manjar tan sabroso

para ser devorado

sotto voce en un corro,

detrás del abanico

de plumas y de oro!

¡Discreta y casta luna,

copudos y altos olmos,

paredes de su casa,

umbrales de su pórtico,

callad, y que el secreto

no salga de vosotros!

Callad; que por mi parte

lo he olvidado todo:

y ella… ella… ¡no hay máscara

semejante a su rostro!

H er hand within my hands,

Her eyes upon my eyes,

Her amorous head

Reclined upon my breast.--

God knows how many times,

With languid step,

We wandered on together

Beneath the high-topped elms,

Which round her portal throw

Shadow and mystery!

And yesterday, scarcely a year

Flown like a breath,

With what a finished grace,

With what a smiling calm,

She said as

an officious friend

Presented each to each--

"I think somewhere we've met,

Your face is known to me"--

Ah! fools and high-born gossips

Who chase athwart the salons

Your prey of scandalous love-tales,

What a prize is lost you here!

How exquisite a morsel

Meant to be devoured

Mid whispers--in corners,

Behind your fans

Of feathers and of gold!--

O! chaste and silent moon,

O! tall and leafy elms,

O! walls which gird her house,

O! shadows of her gate--

Keep silence, let none guess!

Keep silence!--for my part

I have forgotten all,

And she--she--there is no mask

Like to her face!

Rima XLVII

Yo me he asomado a las profundas simas

I have peered into the deep chasms

of earth and sky,

and I have seen the end either with my eyes

or with my thoughts.

But oh! from a heart I reached the abyss

and I bowed for a moment,

and my soul and my eyes were disturbed:

So deep it was and so black!

Rima LII

Olas gigantes que os rompéis bramando

en las playas desiertas y remotas,

envuelto entre la sábana de espumas,

¡llevadme con vosotras!

Ráfagas de huracán que arrebatáis

del alto bosque las marchitas hojas,

arrastrado en el ciego torbellino,

¡llevadme con vosotras!

Nube de tempestad que rompe el rayo

y en fuego ornáis las sangrientas orlas,

arrebatado entre la niebla oscura,

¡llevadme con vosotras!.

Llevadme, por piedad, a donde el vértigo

con la razón me arranque la memoria.

¡Por piedad! ¡Tengo miedo de quedarme

con mi dolor a solas!.

Rime LII

Giant waves that braying break

upon remote, deserted beaches,

wrapped in your sheets of foam,

take me with you!

Hurricane blasts that rip away

from the towering woods their withered leaves,

dragged along in your blind whirlwind,

take me with you!

Tempest clouds that the sunbeam breaks

and in fire adorn the sundered scrollwork,

wreaking havoc within the darkling haze,

take me with you!

Take me for pity’s sake to where vertigo

rips memory from me as it strips me of reason…

For pity’s sake!…. I am afraid to be left

all alone with my pain!

translated by David Bowles

Rima LIII

Tu hermosura y mi dicha a contemplar.

Aquellas que aprendieron nuestros nombres,

¡Esas... no volverán!

¡no volverán!

Volverán del amor en tus oídos

las palabras ardientes a sonar;

como yo te he querido..., desengáñate,

nadie así te amará.

LIII

The dark swallows will return

To hang heir nests upon your balcony.

Again will their wings beat softly on your windowpane,

Calling playfully.

But those that paused for a moment in their flight

To see your beauty and my happiness,

Those, that learned to sing our names,

They.. will not return!

Thick clusters of honeysuckle to your garden

Will return, lovelier than ever,

Climbing the mud-brick walls, in afternoon,

Their perfumed flowers opened full.

But those that were covered with heavy drops of dew,

Which we watched tremble and fall,

Like daytime tears...

They... will not return!

Love, again, will return to sound

with burning whispers in your ears;

Again, perhaps, will your heart

Be roused from languid sleep.

But silent and engrossed and fondly kneeling,

As God before his alter is adored,

As I have loved you dear... be not deluded,

Love like this... will not return!

Rima LXVI

?De donde vengo?... El mas horrible y aspero

De los senderos busca;

Las huellas de unos pies ensangrentados

Sobre la roca dura;

Los despojos de un alma hecha jirones

En las zarzas agudas;

Te diran el camino

Que conduce a mi cuna.

?Adonde voy? El mas sombrio y triste

De los paramos cruza;

Valle de eternas nieves y de eternas

Melancolicas brumas.

En donde este una piedra solitaria

Sin inscription alguna,

Donde habite el olvido,

Alli estara mi tumba?

Rima XCI

Podrá nublarse el sol eternamente;

Podrá secarse en un instante el mar;

Podrá romperse el eje de la tierra

Como un débil cristal.

¡Todo sucederá! Podrá la muerte

Cubrirme con su fúnebre crespón;

Pero jamás en mi podrá apagarse

La llama de tu amor.

May the sun be eternally hazy

May the ocean dry up in an instant

May the axis of the Earth crumble

Like fragile crystal.

Everything can happen! May the death

Cover me with its lugubrious thread;

But in me, the flame of your love

will never fade.
