BORGES, Jorge Luis

inscripciones y exergos y monumentos

y puntuales historiadores;

de la gloria, que acaba por ajar la rosa que venera;

contigo fueron más piadosos, hermano.

En el éxtasis de un atardecer

que no será una noche,

oyes la voz del ruiseñor de Teócrito.

To a minor poet of the anthology

Where lies the memory of the days

which were yours on the earth, and wove

joy and pain and were the universe for you?

The numerable river of the years

has lost them; you are a word in an index.

The gods gave endless glory to others,

inscriptions and exerges and monuments

and prompt historians;

the only thing we know about you, dark friend,

is that you heard the mockingbird one evening.

Between the asphodels of the shadow, your vain shadow

will think that the gods were greedy.

But the days are a web of trivial miseries,

and is there a better destiny than being the ash

of which oblivion is made?

The gods threw over others

the relentless light of glory,

which looks at the entrails and counts the cracks

of glory, which ends up rumpling the rose it worships;

they were more merciful with you, brother.

In the ecstasy of a sunset

which won't be a night,

you hear the voice of the Mockingbird of Theocritus.

El remordimiento

He cometido el peor de los pecados
que un hombre puede cometer. No he sido
feliz. Que los glaciares del olvido
me arrastren y me pierdan, despiadados.

No fui feliz. Cumplida

no fue su joven voluntad. Mi mente
se aplicó a las simétricas porfías
del arte, que entreteje naderías.

Me legaron valor. No fui valiente.
No me abandona. Siempre está a mi lado
La sombra de haber sido un desdichado.

Remorse

I have committed the worst of sins

that a man can commit. I have not been

happy. Let glaciers of oblivion

encircle and drop me, merciless.

My parents begot me for the game—

daring and lovely—of life itself,

for earth and water, for the air and fire.

I cheated them. I wasn’t happy.

I didn’t carry out their youthful will. My mind

applied itself to the obstinate symmetries

of art, that can interweave nothingness.

Valor was my legacy. I wasn’t valiant.

Always it’s at my side. It never leaves me,

the shade of having been a desolate man.

Wroeging

in sleuren, wissen, zonder mededogen.

hun jonge wil. Ik heb alleen geleefd

voor koppige symmetrieën van de kunst

die onbeduidendheden samenweeft.

Zij gaven me de moed. Ik heb die gunst

versmaad. Dit achtervolgt mij nog het meest:

ik ben een ongelukkig mens geweest.

Rain

Quite suddenly the evening clears at last

as now outside the soft small rain is falling.

Falling or fallen. Rain itself is something

undoubtedly which hapens in the past.

Whoever hears it falling has remembered

a time in which a courious twist of fate

brought back to him a flower whose name was ‘rose’

and the perplexing redness of its red.

This rain which spreads its blind across the pane

must aso brighten in forgotten suburbs

the black grapes on a vine across a shrouded

patio now no more. The evening’s rain

brings me the voice, the dear voice of my father,

who comes back now, who never has been dead.

The Just

A man who cultivates his garden, as Voltaire wished.

He who is grateful for the existence of music.

He who takes pleasure in tracing an etymology.

Two workmen playing, in a café in the South, a silent game of chess.

The potter, contemplating a color and a form.

The typographer who sets this page well, though it may not please him.

A woman and a man, who read the last tercets of a certain canto.

He who strokes a sleeping animal.

He who justifies, or wishes to, a wrong done him.

He who is grateful for the existence of Stevenson.

He who prefers others to be right.

These people, unaware, are saving the world.

Shinto

When sorrow lays us low

for a second we are saved

by humble windfalls

of mindfulness or memory:

the taste of a fruit, the taste of water,

that face given back to us by a dream,

the first jasmine of November,

the endless yearning of the compass,

a book we thought was lost,

the throb of a hexameter,

the slight key that opens a house to us,

the smell of a library, or of sandalwood,

the former name of a street,

the colors of a map,

an unforeseen etymology,

the smoothness of a filed fingernail,

the date we were looking for,

the twelve dark bell-strokes, tolling as we count,

a sudden physical pain.

Eight million Shinto deities

travel secretly throughout the earth.

Those modest gods touch us --

touch us and move on.

vertolken mij voorgoed.

The Art of Poetry

To gaze at a river made of time and water

and remember Time is another river.

To know we stray like a river

… and our faces vanish like water.

To feel that waking is another dream

that dreams of not dreaming and that the death

we fear in our bones is the death

that every night we call a dream.

To see in every day and year a symbol

of all the days of man and his years,

and convert the outrage of the years

into a music, a sound, and a symbol.

To see in death a dream, in the sunset

a golden sadnesssuch is poetry,

humble and immortal, poetry,

returning, like dawn and the sunset.

Sometimes at evening there’s a face

that sees us from the deeps of a mirror.

Art must be that sort of mirror,

disclosing to each of us his face.

They say Ulysses, wearied of wonders,

wept with love on seeing Ithaca,

humble and green. Art is that Ithaca,

a green eternity, not wonders.

Art is endless like a river flowing,

passing, yet remaining, a mirror to the same

inconstant Heraclitus, who is the same

and yet another, like the river flowing.

Aprendiendo
